3 Places In Subic For Animal Lovers

1

Have you ever wanted to feed a tiger? A crocodile? Or even sharks?

Ever thought about swimming with a dolphin? Or playing with a sea lion?

Have you ever met up close a sick or injured animal that’s being nursed back to health?

All this can be done around the Subic area, which is about a 2-hour drive from Metro Manila.

If you love animals, it’s time to get out of the city and visit these 3 places in Subic.

Zoobic Safari

Covering over 25 hectares of land, Zoobic Safari is located in Ilanin Forest, which used to be where the US Special Forces and Army Rangers trained for jungle warfare.

The park allows visitors to see domesticated, exotic, and wild animals in their natural habitat.

If you’re more of a Steve Irwin / safari type of person, make sure to check out their “Close Encounter.” It’s a facility that allows everyone to take a close look at Siberian-Bengal tigers.

While you may be tempted to hug these tigers, keep in mind that they will eat literally any animal or human it feast its eyes on. So stay cautious and always listen to the instructions of your tour guide.

Make sure you you don’t miss the “Tiger Safari” and ride a customized safari jeep that roams a two-hectare enclosed area full of tigers.

You’ll have the opportunity to witness these tigers devour chickens. But the experience isn’t free. One whole chicken costs ₱200.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to feed the tigers yourselves. The Tiger Safari guide does it for you. I suggest sitting near the guide so you’ll get a great view of the tigers up close and even feel their breath while it bites down on its food.

If you like crocodiles, head over to “Croco Loco.” Here, you’ll also get a chance to feed the crocs by attaching a chicken on a string that’s tied to a pole. Think of it as “fishing” for crocodiles!

There are many other attractions at Zoobic Safari such as the Savannah, Serpentarium, Rodent World, Animal MuZOOeum, Bird Walk Experience, Aeta Trail & Show, Sky Safari, Zoobic Cave, Forbidden Cave, and an Animal Show.

How to Get There:

  • From SCTEX, take the route going to Subic/SBMA.
  • After the SBMA tollgate, turn right to take Rizal Highway.
  • On the first intersection, turn left and take Argonaut Highway.
  • Continue on Argonaut Highway and then turn left on Corregidor Rd.
  • Drive along Corregidor Rd. and then turn left on Ilanin Rd. You’ll then see road signs which will lead you to the entrance of Zoobic Safari.

Wildlife in Need Rescue Center

Wildlife in Need (WIN) Rescue Center cares for sick and injured wildlife of the forest including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Some of these animals were also confiscated from illegal wildlife pet trade.

I got the chance to visit the rescue center as part of my Lakbay Norte trip. The place is located along Corregidor Rd. which is about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) away from Zoobic Safari.

Our group was given a tour of the place. We were shown a monkey that was found in the forest, and was badly wounded. Our tour guide explained that the poor guy was either challenged by another monkey or was hurt trying to protect his group.

WIN Rescue Center Monkey

Within weeks of rehabilitation, the monkey is now doing okay and is just waiting to be released back to the wild again.

Not every case ends with a happy story though. There is an eagle at WIN Rescue Center that was so badly injured, even its brain was affected. After the injury, it could no longer fly normally nor hunt for its own food.

It was heartbreaking when we found out that due to the brain damage, it no longer knows that it’s an eagle. When we saw the eagle in the cage, it was barely moving. It was just turning its head left and right trying to figure out what’s going on around him.

The kind-hearted folks of WIN takes good care of the eagle by feeding it by hand. Unlike the monkey, this eagle will remain a permanent resident of the center due to its condition.

Ocean Adventure

A trip to Subic wouldn’t be complete without visiting Ocean Adventure.

At Ocean Adventure, you get to see and interact with marine life. It is home to several species of cetaceans such as the False Killer Whale, Bottlenose Dolphin, Rough-toothed Dolphin, and Spotted Dolphin. Some of these animals were injured and rescued in Philippine waters.

The park is also home to about 13 cute South American Sea Lions. There are also forest animals such as the Binturong (or bearcat), Sea Eagle, Philippine Snakes, and the Giant Fruit Bat.

Ocean Adventure likes to mix entertainment with education. You can enjoy shows such as the “Dolphin Friends Show” and “Sea Lion Marine Patrol Show” where different whales, dolphins, and sea lions jump, spin, and do other impressive tricks.

Others will also enjoy the show for wildlife of the forest called, “Walk On The Wild Side.” The show invites guests to explore life in the forest. The show starts off by showing local indigenous Aetas demonstrate their amazing ability to create fire and different tools from bamboo. Guests will also be entertained by different birds, bats, mammals, and reptiles during the show.

I recommend wearing sunblock since the shows are held outdoors. It can get hot at times, but you’ll totally forget about the scorching sun once you start touring the area and lose yourself in the cool animal shows that Ocean Adventure offers.

Ocean Adventure also offers “Interactive Animal Encounters” where you can play with a sea lion, feed sharks, and swim (even dive!) with a dolphin. These encounters are not included in the admission ticket price, and have to be purchased separately.

  • Drive for about 7 to 8 kilometers. Look for directional signs that would lead you to the entrance of Ocean Adventure.
