looloo’s Chocolate Donut Blind Taste Test

Donuts. Why do they really have holes in the middle? This question has plagued humanity ever since the deep-fried, salbabida-like dessert was invented in the 1800s. There are a few theories floating around on the internet but while there’s no definite answer, one thing’s for sure–donuts are irresistible despite their missing centers.

And they’re especially tempting when they’re coated in chocolate! Out of all the donut flavors out there, the classic chocolate remains a favorite choice among donut lovers.

And almost every donut shop has its own version of it! Which is why we’ve dedicated this looloo Blind Taste Test to chocolate donuts, putting four famous brands against each other to see who we can call the best in the metro.

The Rules

The four chosen participants for this BTT are Tim Hortons, Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, and Dunkin’ Donuts. Now before you get angry at us for not including J.CO, turns out they don’t have plain chocolate-frosted donuts (they’re either topped off with mini balls or sprinkles) so it wouldn’t have been fair to compare them to the others.

Chocolate Donut BTT Judges

The Donut Judges

The judges, namely Gwen I., Pam L., Peanut D., and Roegan T. of the looloo crew, had to rate the chocolate donuts based on the following criteria: 1) aroma, 2) flavor, 3) texture, 4) aesthetics, and 5) value for money. With blindfolds on during the entire BTT, they relied solely on their sense of touch, smell, and taste to judge the donuts. The lowest rating for each category is 1 and the highest 5.

The Results

Criteria Peanut D. Gwen I. Roegan T. Pam L. Average Score
Aroma 3 4 4 3 3.5
Flavor 3.5 3 3 3 3.125
Texture 4 4 3 4 3.75
Aesthetics 5 5 5 5 5
Value for Money 3 3 3 3 3

According to the judges, Tim Hortons’ chocolate donut didn’t have enough of an enticing aroma. “I couldn’t really smell it. I had to really make my nose touch the donut. And when I did smell it, it smelled just like bread,” said Peanut D.

They found the flavor lacking also, with everyone agreeing that if they hadn’t known they were eating a chocolate donut, they wouldn’t have been able to guess the flavor at all. “It’s just super sweet. There’s no chocolate in there. Just all sugar,” said Gwen I.

Texture-wise, they gave it decent enough scores for not being too soft or too dense. But it was in the aesthetics department where this donut really shined. Everyone found it to be extremely pleasing to the eye with its glossy chocolate glaze.

As for value for money, they thought it was a little on the pricey side at ₱50 per donut, hence the low scores.

Chocolate Donut #2: Starbucks

Criteria Peanut D. Gwen I. Roegan T. Pam L. Average Score
Aroma 5 5 5 5 5
Flavor 4 3.5 4 4 3.875
Texture 3.5 3.5 3.5 3.5 3.5
Aesthetics 3 3 2 3 2.75
Value for Money 4 5 5 5 4.75

Starbucks’ chocolate donut got off to a great start, with all the judges giving it 5 points for its alluring aroma. “It smelled like what a donut should smell like, unlike the first one which smelled like bread,” said Gwen I.

When it came to flavor, everyone agreed that it was good but was a tad too sweet and a little on the oily side. “There are three things here at play for me. The chocolatey taste, the oily taste, and the almost-too-sweet taste. Those three things combined is a bit confusing,” said Peanut D.

As for texture, it got 3.5 points from everyone for being slightly denser than what they like their donuts to be. It also didn’t fare too well in the aesthetics department, its dark and dull appearance failing to win the judges over.

Good thing it got nearly perfect scores for value for money. The judges think that ₱55 per donut isn’t bad at all, considering how huge it is.

Chocolate Donut #3: Krispy Kreme

Aroma 5 5 5 5 5
Flavor 5 5 5 5 5
Texture 5 5 5 5 5
Aesthetics 4 3.5 3.5 4 3.75
Value for Money 5 5 5 5 5

Out of all the chocolate donuts, the judges thought that Krispy Kreme’s had the most mouth-watering scent. “It smelled really good. This is the only donut that made me excited to eat it because it smells so good,” said Gwen I.

It also got perfect scores for flavor! “It was a bit on the sweet side but I feel it’s how a chocolate donut should be. You can really taste the chocolatey-ness of it and the dough itself was dipped in glaze which added to the sweetness,” said Pam L.

The 5-point streak didn’t stop there as the judges continued to pour in the praise for its texture. “It almost melts in your mouth. When you bite into it, you feel like the edges of the donut close together. It’s almost like biting into cotton candy,” said Peanut D. Its looks let it down though, earning lower scores for its awkwardly big hole in the middle.

But things went back to being perfect again when it was time to rate it for value for money. They thought that ₱50 for a nearly perfect donut was quite the steal!

Chocolate Donut #4: Dunkin’ Donuts

Criteria Peanut D. Gwen I. Roegan T. Pam L. Average Score
Aroma 4.5 4.5 4.5 5 4.625
Flavor 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.5
Texture 5 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.625
Aesthetics 3 3 3 3 3
Value for Money 5 5 5 5 5

According to the judges, Dunkin’ Donut’s chocolate donut is the second best smelling one after Krispy Kreme’s. “You can smell the chocolate in there but not the donut smell. But it’s not bad,” said Gwen I.

Upon tasting it, everyone knew right away which donut it was because of its very distinct, “local chocolate” flavor. “I ate it a lot as a child. Even if the chocolate tastes different from a real chocolate flavor and it’s like a localized version, I still like it,” said Pam L.

As for its texture, everyone liked that it was soft but still had some heftiness to it. “I feel like the dough I could just eat without the glaze because it was good on its own,” said Peanut D. It didn’t do too great in the aesthetics department though, the main comment being that the chocolate glaze was so dark it looked almost black.

But that didn’t stop the judges from giving it five points for value for money. At just ₱22, it’s the cheapest of the four and is everyone’s most sulit pick.
