Aside from being home to Justin Bieber, Ryan Gosling, and the world’s most photogenic President, most Filipinos know nothing else about Canada. But the biggest mystery to us would probably be what Canadians eat because where can we even get Canadian food around here?!
If your curiosity has been piqued, there’s actually a restaurant in Metro Manila that serves big portions of Canadian-American comfort food. And the best part is that they’ve added a bunch of new stuff to their menu and they’re now in Kapitolyo!
New hearty dishes at Main Street: steak pizza, pulled pork sandwich, and apple crumble
When restaurant owner Adam Tan was living in Canada, he always hung out along Main Street, an area populated by a fun mix of restaurants and bars. His favorite tambayan spot inevitably became the inspiration for his own restaurant which he decided to open up back home in the Philippines. Think of his Main Street as a mini version of the original Main Street!
In the same way that the Canadian fare is a melting pot of a ton of other cuisines, Adam’s Main Street features comfort dishes that have been influenced by other cultures. And because he travels to Seattle a lot, there’s an American touch to his menu too. His dishes come in sizable portions and are made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
Main Street’s first branch was in Taguig but they’ve recently set up shop in Kapitolyo to cater to the foodies in the area. It’s much bigger than its predecessor and offers new entrees like pastas, pizzas, sandwiches, and desserts!
If you’re coming with a big, hungry group, make sure everyone gets fed by ordering pizza. They’re shareable and easy on the wallet! There’s The Italian (₱290), a classic combination of tomato basil sauce, mozzarella cheese, sliced onions, crumbled Italian sausage, and dill.
Or you could go for the Seafood Lovers (₱360) if you’re into fresh flavors from the ocean. It’s topped off with tomato basil sauce, mozzarella cheese, prawns, mussels, fish fillet, basil, and parmesan cheese!
For those who like their pizzas more on the indulgent side, don’t miss out on the Bacon and Rosemary (₱280), showered with olive oil, rosemary, mozzarella, white cheese, chopped applewood smoked bacon, and honey garlic drizzle.
Or you could treat yourself to the Steak and Gorgonzola (₱350), capped off with olive oil, mozzarella, gorgonzola cheese, sliced kitayama flank steak, arugula, and balsamic reduction drizzle. EJ. B wrote in his looloo review that all the ingredients complement each other!
To complete your Canadian meal, order your pizza along with the other new additions to the menu. For those who are trying to be healthy, the Miso Glazed Salmon (₱390) is a good option! In his looloo review, Marc M. raved about this dish, saying: “There is a play in texture that I really enjoyed. The Crunchy Sear of the miso glaze leaving the inside moist and the burst of creamy salmon in every bite is just perfect.”
But if you couldn’t care less about the calories, go for The Paseo (₱270), a homemade baguette stuffed with pulled pork, garlic mayo, romaine lettuce, caramelized onions, and roasted green pepper.
Or the Spicy Chicken Sandwich (₱260), made with buttermilk fried chicken fillet coated in buffalo sauce, shredded cabbage, ranch sauce, and pickles.
And if you find that there’s still room in your belly, you might as well order up the Italian Sausage Penne (₱290) too, a pasta dish smothered in tomato basil cream sauce and finished off with slices of Italian sausage.
To end the meal in the most Canadian way possible, you have to get yourself the Apple Crumble! This tempting dessert is made up of sliced apples roasted in butter, honey, and cinnamon held together by a crumble crust and garnished with crushed graham crackers and vanilla ice cream.
Here’s what Julienne D. had to say about the Apple Crumble in her looloo review: “I love how I can taste the cinnamon in every bite and how the apples still manage to remain crisp after all the baking. The crumble crust and the graham topping isn’t too sweet so the vanilla ice cream acts as the sweetener. I think if I didn’t have to share it with the others, I probably would’ve finished it myself.”
