looloo’s Fast Food French Fries Delivery Blind Taste Test

0

French fries may fall under the ‘sides’ category on most menus but we can all agree that these fried sticks of deliciousness deserve a little more credit.

They have the ability to complete a meal (eating a burger just isn’t the same without alternate bites of fries) but they’re also still deeply satisfying even when they’re devoured on their own.

The Contenders

Because fries are amazing and need to be celebrated, we thought we’d do a looloo Blind Taste Test (BTT) dedicated to them. We got fries from five big fast food chains, tried them all, and decided on the best one. Read on to find out which fry bagged first place!

The Rules

Limiting the scope to just fast food french fries, we ordered large fries from Jollibee, Tropical Hut (yes, they’re still alive), Burger King, KFC, and McDonald’s and had them delivered to the looloo HQ. Wendy’s was initially included in the list but we just couldn’t ride with the steep minimum order of ₱800 so we had to drop them.

The judges (namely Gwen I., Pam L., Peanut D., and Roegan T. of the looloo crew) were given five fries from each fast food place and they had to rate them based on their 1) crispiness (taking into consideration that delivered fries won’t be as crispy as fresh fries), 2) flavor, 3) thickness, and 4) value for money. Of course, it wouldn’t be a BTT if they weren’t blindfolded and left with only their sense of touch, smell, and taste to determine if the fries were a yay or a nay.

The judges

Just for kicks, we also jotted down how long it took each fast food chain to get the fries to our doorstep. But it’s not exactly fair competition (we’re right next to a KFC branch) so the delivery speeds weren’t included in their ratings.

The Results

As with all the other BTTs that we’ve done, the winner we were all expecting didn’t come out on top. Almost everyone had a bias towards McDonald’s fries but the judges unknowingly betrayed their own favorite and gave someone else the number one spot.

French Fry #1: Jollibee

Jollibee fries

Criteria Peanut D. Gwen I. Pam L. Roegan T. Average Score
Crispiness 4.5 4 4 4.5 4.25
Flavor 3 5 3 4 3.75
Thickness 3.5 4 5 3.5 4
Value for Money 4.5 4.5 4 5 4.5

The crispiness of Jollibee’s fries impressed everyone, earning ratings of 4s and 4.5s. “It’s rare to get a crispy order of delivered fries so for this one, it’s actually pretty good. There was still remnants of crispiness,” explained Roegan T.

As for the flavor, majority thought that the fries were on the bland side save for Gwen I. who claimed that they were actually pretty flavorful. This made us question the fries’ consistency and if the salt was distributed evenly.

Jollibee fries

While Peanut D. and Roegan T. would’ve liked the fries to be a little bit fatter, Pam L. and Gwen I. thought they were just right. While they had different opinions regarding thickness, everyone agreed that at ₱49, Jollibee’s large fries are good value for money.

Note: We called Jollibee at 11:33 AM and their fries were delivered at 12:25 PM.

Jollibee can be found at these locations.

French Fry #2: Tropical Hut

Criteria Peanut D. Gwen I. Pam L. Roegan T. Average Score
Crispiness 2 2 2 2.5 2.125
Flavor 2 2 3 2.5 2.375
Thickness 4 3 4 4 3.75
Value for Money 2 2 1 1 1.5

Tropical Hut’s fries had no crispiness left in them whatsoever when they got delivered to us, forcing the judges to give it low scores in this area. Roegan T. called them the soggiest fries he’s ever tasted, even comparing them to pasta.

The flavor didn’t fare any better, with everyone complaining that the fries were completely bland and were in dire need of salt. Because the fries seemed to have no seasoning at all, all the judges could taste was the potato and the oil.

Tropical Hut fries

They found these fries a little bit thicker compared to Jollibee’s but the positive comments stopped there. With the large fries priced at ₱60, they think it’s way too expensive and is not worth spending money on at all.

Note: We called Tropical Hut at 11:50 AM and their fries were delivered at 12:37 PM.

Tropical Hut can be found at these locations.

French Fry #3: Burger King

Burger King fries

Criteria Peanut D. Gwen I. Pam L. Roegan T. Average Score
Crispiness 4.5 4.5 3.5 4 4.125
Flavor 4 4 4 4 4
Thickness 4 4.5 4 4.5 4.25
Value for Money 3 3 3 3 3

Burger King’s fries did well in the crispiness department, garnering an average score of 4.125. “There are still parts that are pretty crispy, especially those that are semi burnt. It’s like Pik-Nik levels. It’s definitely not as soggy as the first one,” said Peanut D.

The flavor also got good feedback from the judges, earning a score of 4 across the board. “There was a bit of saltiness to it and it tasted potato-ey so there’s definitely flavor there compared to the first one where it was just bland,” commented Pam L.

Burger King fries

They found the fries to be of a satisfying girth too, with everyone agreeing that it was the thickest one they’ve tried so far. The only thing they didn’t like was how much Burger King charged for their large fries (₱68) but only put a few sticks in there.

Note: We called Burger King at 11:40 AM and their fries were delivered at 12:12 PM.

Burger King can be found at these locations.

French Fry #4: KFC

KFC fries

Criteria Peanut D. Gwen I. Pam L. Roegan T. Average Score
Crispiness 4 4 3 4.5 3.875
Flavor 4.5 5 5 5 4.875
Thickness 4.5 5 4 5 4.625
Value for Money 4.5 5 4 5 4.625

Crispiness-wise, KFC’s fries didn’t fare too badly, the common consensus being that they were half crispy, half soggy. “You can taste the crispiness on the edges but inside it’s very soft and soggy,” said Pam L.

As for flavor, it was what gave the fries away. Gwen I. correctly identified them as KFC’s, saying: “They’re very flavorful. You can tell they’re from KFC because it has that distinct taste. If you cook fries at home, it’s not going to taste like this. They obviously added secret ingredients.”

KFC fries

Mostly everyone loved how thick-cut the fries were, with Peanut D. commenting that they almost felt like steak fries. They also agreed that for ₱57, you get a decent amount of fries in there so they gave high marks for value for money.

Note: We called KFC at 11:35 AM and their fries were delivered at 12:02 PM.

KFC can be found at these locations.

French Fry #5: McDonald’s

Crispiness 4 3.5 3 3.5 3.5
Flavor 4.5 4 5 4.5 4.5
Thickness 4.5 4 5 3 4.125
Value for Money 4.5 4 4.5 4 4.25

In terms of crispiness, McDonald’s fries were sort of a disappointment. According to the judges, the other fries still had crispy edges but they found that these fries had none of that at all. “It’s not crispy, it’s more on the soggy side,” concluded Gwen I.

The flavor helped pull up the total score though, with everyone saying that they loved the distinct taste. “There’s a certain flavor. When you eat it, it tastes so familiar. I guess when you’ve eaten so many McDonald’s meals in your life, you’ll know what a McDonald’s fry is”, said Peanut D.

McDonald’s fries

As for thickness, they agreed that it wasn’t the skinniest fry they’ve tasted but it’s also not the heftiest. McDonald’s large fries is the most expensive out of the bunch at ₱71 but considering how much you get in a packet, the judges still think it’s good value for money.

Note: We called McDonald’s at 11:40 AM and their fries were delivered at 12:20 PM.

McDonald’s can be found at these locations.

The looloo crew has spoken and the obvious winner of the Fast Food French Fries Blind Taste Test is KFC! They earned major points for almost all categories, finishing with a total score of 18 out of 20.

French fries galore!

Jollibee, with 16.5 points, barely scrapes past its arch rival to land second place. McDonald’s, with 16.38 points, settles for the third spot (we know we’re going to get a lot of fans upset with this one!) Burger King isn’t all that far behind with 15.38 points, finishing at fourth place. Tropical Hut, who only managed to get 9.75 points, is the kulelat of the bunch.

And there you have it, folks! The next time you’re getting french fries delivered, you know who to call!
