1. AsiaPOP Comicon

One name that’s been making huge waves across the country’s various fandoms is AsiaPOP Comicon Manila 2015 (APCC Manila), which aims to bring together the best in movies, TV, comics, gaming, cosplay, toys, and collectibles in one huge event similar to those renowned international comic conventions every pop culture fan dreams of attending.

It’s easy to see why Manila’s pop culture fans are excited for this inaugural event. Who wouldn’t be, with high-profile guests like actors Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, Aquaman in Batman v Superman) and Jeremy Shada (Finn the Human in Adventure Time), veteran comic book artist Whilce Portacio, and world-famous cosplayers like Monika Lee and Vampy Bit Me!

Like most conventions, APCC Manila will also play host to various booths, exhibits, and events like cosplay competitions. They’ll be revealing more names from their star-studded pop culture lineup soon, so be sure to keep track of announcements online. Who knows, your favorite pop culture idols may be coming to Manila very soon!

Catch the AsiaPOP Comicon on September 17-20 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

2. Cosplay Mania

Fans of cosplay, anime, manga, and anything (or everything) else about Japanese pop culture should definitely check out the widely popular Cosplay Mania, or “CosMania.” Just make sure to bring your camera, because you can expect to see countless attendees in awesome and skillfully crafted costumes!

As you may have guessed, the event’s main highlight is cosplay, where fans wear costumes and engage in role-playing to portray characters from anime, manga, cartoons, movies, tv shows, books, and other fictional works. Here, attendees can have fun expressing their passions while making friends with fellow fans, cosplayers, and people in the industry.

Don’t worry if you’re not much of a costume person. Even without a costume, you’ll surely enjoy taking a few selfies with cosplayers, meeting fellow fans, checking out the cool merchandise, and participating in Cosplay Mania’s exciting lineup of events. They’re also known to bring some of the biggest names in international cosplay and Japanese music!

Cosplay Mania 2015 is scheduled for October 3 & 4 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Avid gamers, roaring spectators, energetic shoutcasters, booming sound systems, and thrilling video game tournaments being broadcast live on gigantic screens are just some of the things you can expect at the E-Sports and Gaming Summit or ESGS.

ESGS held its first-ever event just last year, but the positive reception from local e-sports, gaming, and game development enthusiasts has already prompted them to organize ESGS 2015. One of the biggest highlights of ESGS is its e-sports, or competitive gaming, tournaments, where audiences can gather to watch local professional gamers battle live on screen in popular e-sports titles like Dota 2, League of Legends, CS:GO, and Hearthstone.

Aside from hosting e-sports tournaments, ESGS also aims to showcase the best in gaming technology and local game development. Around the venue, you’ll find exhibits featuring gaming peripherals, killer PC case mods, and local game development studios where you can even test their latest computer, console, and virtual reality prototype games!

ESGS 2015 is set to happen on October 24 & 25 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

4. Komikon

International comics and comic book movies may be all the rage right now, but you’ll be happy to know that the Philippines is also home to a rich and promising local comic book scene filled with talented writers and artists. And that’s precisely what Komikon aims to showcase with its annual Philippine komiks convention.

Most of us have probably heard about popular Philippine comics, or “komiks” like Trese by Budjette Tan, but you’ll find over 100 more titles for sale at the event – ready to be picked up and enjoyed by anyone looking for good local writing and art. And if that wasn’t cool enough, you can also meet the creative minds behind these titles all around the venue.

Aside from its main event, Komikon also hosts several mini-events like Summer Komikon and Komikon Indieket, the grand independent komiks market of Komikon.

Komikon 2015 will happen on November 14 & 15 at the Bayanihan Center, Unilab Compound, Pasig City. But before the main event, they’ll also be holding the Komikon Indieket on August 15 at the same venue.

5. NexCon

If you’re a fan of anything related to science fiction and fantasy, NexCon should be on the top of your event list! After only two years, NexCon has already become a haven for plenty of sci-fi and fantasy genre fan communities here in the Philippines.

Stormtroopers, fantasy creatures, and a wide range of comic book heroes and villains are just some of the colorful characters you’ll encounter around the convention. It doesn’t matter if the series, movie, book, or title is mainstream locally or not, because you’re sure to find passionate members of the fandom here either way.

Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, DC Comics, Star Wars, Game of Thrones – name any sci-fi or fantasy fandom and you’ll most probably find fellow fans to cosplay, role-play, and geek out with. Plus, there’s also tons of cool merchandise to be bought during the event!

NexCon 2015 happened last May 16 & 17, but don’t worry if you missed it! They’ve already announced NexCon 3, which they’re calling their biggest one yet, for April 2 & 3, 2016 at the SMX Convention Center.

6. ToyCon

ToyCon, or the Philippine Toys, Hobbies, and Collectibles Convention, is one of the largest events for collecting enthusiasts here in Manila. Aside from promoting interest in collecting, ToyCon also strengthens the country’s collector community by providing a space where members can gather, interact, and showcase their collections.

Countless hobbyists and collectors flock to ToyCon every year to score good deals and rare finds at the event’s sprawling retailer floor, where highly sought-after collectors’ items like action figures, dolls, diecast cars and robots, comics, cards, and pop memorabilia are sold. Another main attraction is the event’s annual Live Action Figure Cosplay competition.

A lot of the attendees will be on the hunt for unique collectibles, so make sure to come early if you’re looking for these items yourself. That way, you can check out the shops and get the merchandise you’re looking for before most of the rare items disappear.

ToyCon 2015 happened last June 19-21 at the Megatrade Halls in SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. ToyCon usually happens around June, so just watch out for their 2016 announcement!
